Hatch Luncheonette
About This Spot
Stepping into Hatch Luncheonette in the heart of Darlington feels a little like finding a quiet corner where the day slows down just enough to catch your breath. Nestled on Blackwellgate, this welcoming café unfolds gently across two bright floors, where light spills in through large windows and greenery softens the modern decor. Whether you choose to settle in upstairs around a generous communal table or enjoy the afternoon sun outside, Hatch feels both familiar and thoughtfully arranged for moments of calm and connection.
The pace here is relaxed but lively—not rushed, yet bustling discreetly with people who come to savour carefully crafted coffee and thoughtfully composed food. The aroma of fresh roast coffee mingles with the gentle hum of friendly chatter, setting a mood that’s equally suited to a quiet morning with a book or a casual catch-up with friends. There’s an earnestness to the way staff move through the space—attentive and warm without ever feeling intrusive.
Food at Hatch is a seamless extension of its atmosphere, serving up comforting favourites alongside surprising touches that invite you to linger. The dishes arrive with a natural ease, whether it’s a perfectly poached egg resting on house sourdough, smoky notes from cured salmon, or the vibrant freshness of a falafel bowl paired with pickles and dukkha. Cakes, too, paint a quiet allure — little moments of sweetness that invite you to slow down further, complemented by expertly made cappuccinos or a smooth, rich hot chocolate. This isn’t about rushing through a meal; it’s about sitting with the experience, tasting each detail while the world outside moves on.
Hatch has a way of feeling like a local’s secret without ever needing to hide. It’s where familiar faces meet new ones over breakfast that manages to feel special but never overdone, and coffee that hits the right note each time. The space encourages a welcome sense of belonging, whether you’re popping in for a quick takeaway or making an afternoon of it in the light-filled dining room.

Had a fantastic eggs Benedict here! Just the ticket as always backed up with great coffee. The staff are lovely and provide a quality experience in the lovely surroundings. I look forward to my next visit!

We were looking for a breakfast place that didn’t only have fried breakfast options and this was perfect. We had granola, Turkish eggs and a sausage bap with ‘egg blanket’. Coffee was good too. The upstairs area has a large table for bigger parties. Staff were super helpful.

Love coming to Hatch, we often get a coffee and Bacon Ciabatta to go and sometimes sit in. Never had a bad experience, food is always delicious, service is great. Buttermilk chicken bowl is one of my favourites, popped in today for scrambled eggs on sourdough and a coffee…great coffee, great food, great place!

A lovely cafe with tasty roasted Rountons coffee. Flat whites are nice and strong tasting. You can get To Go from next door, or to sit in over two floors with a small seating area out front that catches the afternoon sun. A nice home from home ambience with greenery and modern decor. It’s also open later in the afternoon than other cafes in town. Food is served to mid afternoon and a sweet cake offering all day.

Hatch will forever be my favourite cafe to visit. The staff are so friendly and there is always a warm atmosphere. The decor inside is beautiful and modern, and is the perfect place for a coffee catch-up with friends, to read a book in peace or study. The food is amazing, it is high-quality and well-presented and there is a wide selection of cakes - something for everybody! The coffee is lovely and the baristas are very talented with their latte art! I love the coffee so much that I use their own beans (that can be purchased from Htch to Go) in my coffee machine at home! Could not recommend more highly.

Hatch is modern dishes, presented beautifully with taste to match! Great produce! All cooked freshly on the premises, this can lead to a little wait occasionally! But be sired the staff are trying their best, I’ve only mentioned it by way of the 4 ⭐ but I can promise you it’s always worth it I think if you know at busy times you may wait a little bit, you build it into your visit . IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN GO IT 100% WORTH IT X

Alongside hatch to go, you can find some of the best coffee in the town. It's standard rounton beans, but the baristas are great at pulling the best qualities out from them. Definitely check out the food though, with extremely fresh and bright flavours delivered across a well curated menu. Most ingredients are locally sourced, and a picture attached below shows some of the providences. Breakfast is served all day (we were told!) but even if you miss it, the bowls are honestly to die for. I recommend the buttermilk chicken and the falafel, but the salad is the star of the show and is included with most dishes. Al fresco dining is uncovered, but sheltered from too much noise, wind, and sun. In door dining finds itself in some extremely quaint, cutely decorated rooms over multiple floors. Service wasn't really "with a smile" on our visit, but we couldn't fault the speed and efficiency of our server.

This place is just mint. The coffee is 100% amazing and it's also dog friendly! There's a large selection of cakes and the food menu is unique, tasty with some great specials on weekly. The vibe is chilled, the staff are so welcoming and you cannot go wrong whether you're in for a quick coffee, some cake, a lunch meet with food or simply an end of the day Gin (8pm closing on Fri and Sat ) I will be visiting regularly If you like this review, please support by leaving a thumbs up and post to your friends using the share tab
